3 Reasons to take omega-3
Omega-3s are a family of fats that are important for your health. Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is an essential dietary fat. You need ALA to make other omega-3 fats called long-chain (LCN-3). Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are LCN-3 fats. ALA makes these in your body.
In our years of experience, we have tried and recommended all kinds of supplements to clients, friends and even to each other and ourselves! The perennial ones are the ones that tend to get results that stick, and Omega-3 is definitely one of them, here are 3 reasons to consider including it in your supplement stack.
Contrary to what a lot of people think, eating fat (healthy fats!) won’t make you fat. Actually, it will help you get leaner! That’s right, I love taking Omega 3 when I try to get lean. That’s because the fatty acids EPA and DHA in fish oil increase your insulin sensitivity, which regulates blood sugar use. When you are more insulin sensitive, your body responds better to carbs and sugars and can send more of them into your muscles as glycogen instead of storing them as fat.
Of course, you still have to make sure that you’re in a caloric deficit if you want to lose fat, and eating a lower carb diet will also definitely help you see results.
Another way fish oil is good for you is that it reduces inflammation. This will help you get leaner, but it will also reduce joint pain, improve digestion and support bone health. When your body is inflamed inside (due to excess body fat, stress or wrong foods), your risk of injury and getting sick is drastically increased.
To reduce inflammation in your body, make sure you also exercise and eat healthy as they are key factors.
My third reason why I take Omega 3 is to improve my athletic performance. Having enough healthy fats in your diet will help you produce more testosterone and have better endurance. Since fish oil reduces inflammation after workouts, you will recover quicker and will be able to train more often. Also, since your testosterone levels will be higher, your performance will be better in the gym or in your sport and you will be able to gain more muscle.
I take omega 3 because we normally already have enough omega 6 in our diets (and your body produces omega 9). The key between the different numbers here is the ratio, and you want to keep it to less than 4:1 between the omega 6 and omega 3.
