Open/Close Menu Consistency, Perseverance, Progress

Just like everyone else, my motivation goes up and down depending on all kinds of factors, for work and for training. It’s completely normal, so the key to getting the most results is finding ways to stay down for as little time as possible and to get back up for as long as possible. Here are my top 3 tips to stay motivated in your fitness journey.

  • Set realistic goals, plan how to get there, write it down

“If you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail” This saying is so true. If you go on a mission without a plan, you’re going to start getting distracted by everything around you, start making excuses for not making your workouts, and start training in all kinds of ways. Some people tell me they want to get bigger biceps and chest, less fat in the stomach, run a marathon and jump higher, all in one month! Unfortunately, it is not realistic to train for all these things at the same time. Pick the number one priority and focus on this. Yes, you can do the other ones too, but remember what the main thing this. And make sure the main thing, remains the main thing.

Once that’s done, make a plan on how to get there and stick to it, no matter what. Treat the workouts like they’re appointments, not something you can always cancel if you need to go for a coffee with a friend. Finally, write it down to make it official, and leave it somewhere so you can see it every day. Whenever you won’t feel like it, or when you’ll forget why you’re getting up earlier in the morning or why you’re having a grilled chicken salad instead of burgers, you’ll walk by your post-it and remember that it’s all worth it.

  • Take before and after pictures

This has been one of the best strategies with my clients to keep them motivated. With all of life’s events, sometimes people have tougher weeks, business trips or get sick so it’s normal to lose the momentum and maybe even the motivation. One of the things I tell my clients when we first start is to take a picture as soon as possible, so that after a few weeks or months, when motivation is a bit lower, they can look back and see how far they’ve come. This usually boosts the morale because you might not see the difference when you look in the mirror every day, but when you compare two pictures with a few weeks of hard training in between (and healthy eating), you’re sure to see a difference!

  • Get a personal trainer

Accountability is a huge factor when trying to reach your goals. Whenever I decide to target a goal, I make sure I tell the people around me. This forces me to push as hard as I can to make it happen, because I don’t want to feel like I failed. In the same way, having a personal trainer to keep you accountable and motivated will increase your chances of reaching your goals majorly. You might find it annoying on certain days, but when you will look back once you’ve accomplished your objectives, you will realize how important those little pushes were to get you there.

If personal training is too expensive, The Physical Training Company and myself also offer semi-private personal training, which is the same (you get your own personalized program) but in small groups of up to 5 people. This is also helpful because you make friends with the other people in the group and keep each other motivated while having fun.
